About Me
I am Jacopo Sala a technology enthusiast passionate about solar energy and innovation. Over the years, I've investigated Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells, at imec, UHasselt, EnergyVille, and KU Leuven to contribute to a more sustainable future.
I love tackling complex challenges and I am always looking for new ways to innovate. I'm also actively supporting European networks for young professionals in sustainable energy, where I collaborate with like-minded youth to share knowledge and best practices while supporting the development of youth-led organisations.
Professional Experience
Research and Development Specialist at PVcase

In my time at PVcase in Barcelona, focusing on the development and maintenance of PVcase Yield, an online software simulations based on 3D ray tracing and thermoelectric modeling of photovoltaic panels. My daily tasks led to improved accuracy and flexibility of simulations, and I worked on expanding the offering through new physics-based functionalities tailored to industry needs.
PhD Researcher in Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells 🇧🇪

Amazed and intrigued by the complexity of perovskites, I began my journey in the belgian labs of imec/EnergyVille hyped by the growing expectations of a long-awaited breakthrough in photovoltaics.
In order to achieve world record level devices, I first built my personal knowledge on the results previously achieved in imec. Next, I engineered a wider bandgap perovskites to optimally tune the optoelectrical properties of the perovskite junction to maximise the overall effiency. The work aimed at the development of different compositions for different multijunction electrical configurations: Compositional Investigation for Bandgap Engineering of Wide Bandgap Triple Cation Perovskite
To follow up, I investigated the steps to build a 2-Terminal based device in collaboration with the research division on silicon-based solar cells. As a first step, we assessed the surface dynamics of the available materials. Then deposition parameters where optimised layer-by-layer up to the achievement of a 26.4% efficiency solar cell with an area of 1cm2.
As the opportunity arised and the focus of my work moved towards an in-depth understanding of the electrical configuration of perovskite-based modules and multijunctions, I moved to UHasselt's imo-imomec/imec/EnergyVille where I developed a GUI-based Tandem Module Simulator (TaMoS): A 2D Simulation-Assisted Investigation of a Low Breakdown Voltage Module
Master Thesis Student at imec 🇧🇪

In conclusion to my studies and as a first working experience, I researched alternative materials for Hole Transport Layers (HTL) to improve high-temperature stability and reduce production costs of third-generation perovskite-based photovoltaic cells.
Programming & 42 Barcelona

More recently, I've been diving into low-level programming at 42 Barcelona, an incredible coding school that emphasizes peer-learning and project-based education. The experience has been both challenging and rewarding, teaching me not only how to code but also how to think critically, work independently, and collaborate effectively.
Along the way, I've developed skills in:
- C programming, including memory management, process communication, and threading.
- Shell scripting, building a mini-shell to understand command parsing, redirections, and environment variables.
- Systems programming, working with signals, mutexes, semaphores, and virtual machines.
- Game development, exploring how Linux and Mac handle graphics and screen rendering.
Eventually, I combined my knowledge to develop my own shell with reduced functionalities compared to Bash. Through Minishell, I learned how Bash processes commands, from parsing input to handling quotes, redirections, pipes, and environment variables.
